Deep in the heart of Blizzard headquarters we go hands-on with Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm.
Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm, the story of intergalactic war between three very different factions - the Terrans, Protoss and Zerg. But the Zerg are really so terrible, or do they only get a bad reputation? Sure, they can do an intergalactic terrorist born and grew to consume all life in the universe, but ultimately they are just what they were programmed to do to. To get help in the minds of these carnivorous creatures, we traveled developer Blizzard Entertainment and spent some hands-on time with this upcoming expansion. While the team was tight-lipped on anything about multiplayer, we get to some of the changes coming to the game 's to see single-player experience. [ Spoiler Alert : This preview contains minor spoilers of Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty].

The focus of this expansion is Sarah Kerrigan. Her career in the Starcraft universe has been a bloody: first as a ghost in the Terran military pilot and then as the Queen of the deadly blades. But all that changed with the completion of the Wings of Liberty. Now to keep Kerrigan 's over most of the Zerg Swarm has been smashed, and their memories are than their rulers, at best, patchy. Arcturus Mengsk: Your burning hatred for all life in the galaxy was also cooked to a man. And while we don 't know all the details, we know that she works for the Zerg to bring back under its control and the fight for the Terran Dominion' s ruler. Unlike the previous campaign 's hero, Jim Raynor, Kerrigan takes a practical approach to warfare and doesn' t mind mixing up to the front. When she arrives on a planet, it is not, do some one-shot bit of terrorism, it 's there to conquer them all.
What all this means is that you will be in control of Kerrigan throughout the majority of Heart of the Swarm. The developers likened her to one of the hero units from Warcraft III--a persistent character whom you will build and customize to fit your play style. Based on what we saw, the majority of this customization came from Kerrigan's different battle focuses--interchangeable skill sets that defined what abilities she could use in battle. Of the two available, we chose the corruption focus before heading down to Char. Our mission here was to kill Za'gara, a Zerg brood mother who refused to acknowledge us as the real Queen of Blades. This mission felt like it was intended to get us acquainted with a specific Zerg unit--the Baneling. Banelings are, of course, the Zerg's explosive infantry who can spray everything they hit with damaging acid. All across the planet there were pockets of Zerg eggs that contained groups of Banelings.
Za 'gara targeted these eggs can claim, and it was a race to see who might be a certain number of eggs from the first survey. Kerrigan 's style of play was similar when she was a human spirit. With an oversized gun, they could deliver high damage on midrange shots, albeit with a low rate of fire. Since we only had access to Zergling and Banelings, we had to lean heavily Kerrigan 's battle-focused skills to take down more dangerous enemies. The ability to corruption would instantly kill a target (if it wasn 'ta huge and heroic) and five broodlings spawn in its place. Corrosive spores was an area of ??area of ??effect ability to cause the affected enemy units take more damage every time they are hit. This capability works particularly well with our Quick-Hitting Zergling. The focus also give a small bonus for our armor.
Banelings can quick work of almost any structure.
The real fun came, as decided by collecting the required number of eggs, Kerrigan, hatch them all at once. This immediately provides us approximately 200 additional units on the site. We then rolled this massive violence in the heart of the Za 'gara' s base and let our dozens of Banelings make short work with the site. It was a very appropriate finale, and true to the style of the zerg. Once we returned from the battlefield, we checked with our two advisers - and Izsha Abathur - on the planet-side stroke screen. An infestation adjutant (aide before was completely cybernetic) Izsha provided us with details for upcoming tasks and helped to fill the gaps in Kerrigan 's broken memory.
The well-mannered Abathur was a bloated creature Kerrigan 's own design, while still the Queen of Blades. Its function has been further developed and adapt our Zerg army in the same way Raynor 's mechanics in Wings of Liberty has. The currency for the expansion of our units of DNA. We gathered these resources by attempting missions and side quests completed in these missions. With the Zergling, for example, we could develop, so that it could move faster, be established immediately in battle, or smaller broodlings spawn after death. Once we had purchased two of the three possible upgrades, then we had the opportunity to drastically change our unity in one of two ways. For the Zergling, it was a choice between hatching in groups of three with no additional costs or jump on enemies, who came too close.
When our army was in order, we headed for our next job on the frozen moon Kaldir. Another of our breeding mothers, Na 'fash had used her Zerg here. After Izsha, Na 'fash was probably trying to build their brood' s capacity by \ on the moon's harsh environment. Abathur said he could produce this mutation for us, but we need some DNA out of the area 's first survey of the local creatures. Ago in preparation for the fight, we changed focus Kerrigan 's struggle to spec ops. This focus was more reminiscent of her time as a ghost to do with Psi-shadow, the ability to provide a copy of itself that half damage and pulse prices, an ability that stuns multiple targets in a small area. The focus also provides a bonus to their power - the charging meter, which is issued by all StarCraft units to execute special attacks or other secondary skills.
The moon itself presented an interesting problem: its arctic winds would freeze our units instead of every few minutes, making them vulnerable to enemy attacks. As we navigated through a wide glacial valley, we have every opportunity we could to reduce the local species and collect their DNA for Abathur 's research. Once we had collected enough, Abathur was capable of mutation, our forces are to prevent the freezing. This upgrade came just in time, as we soon found the corpse of the Na 'fash and Protoss camp not too far away. The Protoss were more than surprised that the galaxy 's number one villain weakened and wasted no effort in trying to find the rest of its fleet to support contact. We were now to destroy a deadline for their communication towers and to stop its transmission.
Your selected combat focus determines what skills Kerrigan in the struggle.
In the struggle "s worked wonders focus spec ops fight against the Protoss 'our hero \ Archon massive units. Even if they could blow us in a moment, the Archons were rendered helpless because of our ability to pulse. Once the battle was over, we checked-in one last time with our consultants, Izsha and Abathur, which gives us a little insight into what '. to come s. In an interview with Izsha showed Kerrigan' s arrest by indiscriminate violence, Kerrigan went so far as to be regretted, for the attack on innocent people to express. In an interview with Abathur, Kerrigan said, that it is a metamorphic, a unity that could fuel its own evolution are needed. Could this be a new Zerg unit entering the ranks? Blizzard had no comment to . on this or other details of this extension Nevertheless, we can wait 't to find out what our surprises for Starcraft II: Heart of the Swarm.
